Legal Number Plates
This applied from September 2001 in accordance with BS AU 145d Statutory Instrument 2001/No 561. New format will consist of 2 letters, 2 numbers a space of 33mm and a group of 3 letters.
A - Personalisation
This is required and must include the post code and name of the supplier. This should be placed at the base of the number plate.
B - British Standard Number
This is the number of the British Standard which the number plate conforms to. It allows the supplier of the number plate to be identified.
C - Coach Line
Coach lines can be up to 6 mm wide and any colour. Coach lines are optional.
D - Country Badge
This is an optional badge that identifies the country of registration of the car, useful for travellers. Certain badges have been approved by the DVLA.
Age Identifier
The middle two numbers on the plate identify when the number plate was made.

Area Identifier
The first letter on the number plate identifies the local memory tag, the second letter identifies the local identifier.
